Vadu Rural Health Program

       The Vadu Rural Health Program(VRHP) is an unique experiment in public-private partnership between a NGO (KEM Hospital,Pune), the District Government (Zillah Parishad,Pune) and the State (Health Services), Government of Maharashtra initiated in 1976 to innovate health care delivery to a population of 68,000 over 22 villages in rural Pune District in Western India. Using a 3-tier approach, the Vadu Rural Health Program provides primary health care through its Outreach Program and mandates the implementation of all National Health Programs.

        Shirdi Sai Baba Rural Hospital

        The Program is head quartered at the Shirdi Sai Baba Rural Hospital , Vadu Budruk which provides multi-disciplinary secondary level care which is supported in its endeavor by its apex tertiary care institution, the KEM Hospital , Pune.

         Health and Demographic Surveillance System (Vadu HDSS)

         The Vadu Rural Health Program integrates a multi-disciplinary approach to extending quality health care to an under-privileged rural population. The program experiments with integrating health research and service with the goal of influencing  practice and  policy. The  Vadu HDSS independently tracks vital events including births,deaths, causes of death, migrations and marriages and serves to monitor trends in fertility and mortality interalia over time.The surveillance system serves to develop a longitudinal database platform for addressing the research needs in public health.

         Vadu Research

         The Research portfolio at Vadu spans community based epidemiological, bio-medical, intervention studies as well as  operations and health systems research. Vadu has recently taken up vaccine trails and other clinical trials on its research portfolio. The research agenda prioritizes existing needs of public health importance but also addresses research needs for newly emerging public health issues.
